This could easily be my favorite game but they have just released a beta as a final product and left players with a hollow game experience. I keep hoping they add things like diplomacy to deepen the gameplay but I doubt itll happen at this point.

Brigands you eliminate when clearing a hideout count towards the Needs Help With Brigands quest, actually. Each hideout has a certain number of units inside that vary as units venture out, return, and are generated, and you can see how many there are on the campaign map by counting the banners at the hideout. Also, you are bad at hunting down brigands because you neither have cavalry nor non-pack horses to boost the speed of your foot troops. Having an all-cavalry force (including mounted heroes) boosts party speed by 40% of base speed, and having an all-foot force that has at least one non-pack horse per soldier will boost it by 20% (though this can be raised to 31% with perks IIRC). Having a Battanian heritage will also greatly help you pursue and evade people in forests.
